Grants and Incentives for Going Solar in the UK (2025 Edition)

Thinking about going solar in 2025?

You’re not alone — with rising energy prices, growing climate awareness, and better technology, more UK homeowners and businesses are making the switch. But the good news doesn’t stop there: there are still a number of grants, incentives and tax benefits available to help offset the cost of solar panel installation.

In this post, we’ll break down what support is available, who’s eligible, and how to make the most of it this year.

Is Solar Still Worth It in 2025?

Yes — more than ever. While upfront installation costs have come down in the past decade, solar systems still represent a significant investment. But with electricity prices at record highs and solar tech more efficient than ever, your return on investment (ROI) can be faster than you think — especially if you combine it with the right incentives.

  • As part of its plan to promote clean energy, the UK government announced a zero VAT rate on the installation of energy-saving materials — including solar panels and home batteries.

    ✅ Applies to:

    • Solar PV panels

    • Solar thermal panels

    • Battery storage (even if retrofitted later)

    • Installation and labour costs

    📅 Available Until:

    March 31, 2027

This means you save 20% instantly on your entire system cost.

  • The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) allows solar system owners to get paid for the excess electricity they export back to the grid.

    How it works:

    • You generate electricity from your solar panels

    • You use what you need

    • Any unused electricity is exported to the grid, and your supplier pays you a rate per kWh

    To Qualify:

    • You must use a certified installer (like us!)

    • Have a smart meter or export meter installed

    Export Rates (as of mid-2025):

    • Vary by supplier — typically 2p to 15p per kWh

    • Some suppliers offer fixed export tariffs, others offer flexible rates

💡 Tip: Shop around to find the best SEG rate for your usage.

  • While not exclusive to solar, the ECO4 scheme helps low-income households make energy-saving improvements, which may include solar panels as part of a wider retrofit.

    You may qualify if:

    • You receive certain government benefits

    • Your home is energy inefficient (EPC rating D or lower)

    • You live in England, Scotland or Wales

You can apply through an approved installer or your local council.

  • Some councils and local authorities offer additional funding for renewable energy projects, including solar PV systems, particularly in rural or off-grid areas.

These schemes can vary by region but may offer:

    • Partial funding for solar installation

    • Support for adding solar to community buildings

    • Special loans or low-interest finance options

    How to check:

Visit your local council website or check the Simple Energy Advice tool to find out what’s currently available in your postcode.

  • The Home Upgrade Grant is aimed at off-gas grid homes and may fund solar panels as part of a broader package.

    Eligibility:

    • Low-income households

    • EPC ratings of D or lower

    • Located in England

Phase 2 of HUG is now running in many areas — and it’s worth checking availability via your council or the Gov.uk website.

  • Battery storage lets you store the electricity your panels generate and use it later — especially during the evenings or when grid prices are high.

And with 0% VAT currently applying to batteries, it’s never been more cost-effective to install both together.

  • To qualify for the 0% VAT and Smart Export Guarantee, your installation must be carried out by a certified installer. MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accreditation ensures the work meets high industry standards — and gives you access to protections like insurance-backed warranties.

At Solar Synergy Solutions, we're fully MCS-certified and can guide you through the entire process — from grant eligibility to final installation.
